Basic Tour - $5.00 for adults, $4.00 for students
Tours at Millard's Crossing are very interactive and are designed to entertain as well as inform. Students start in the Old Free Methodist Chapel with a "Guess-What-It-Is" session with a few of our antique tools and gadgets. They are given a lesson on how to play a pump organ, after which some of the children (and teachers) get to try it. This presentation is followed by a schoolhouse session where the children learn about cures and punishments for unruly behavior, "cautionary" tales and then write with real quill pens. After the schoolhouse session, children ring the bell (and learn its purposes as a timekeeper as well as the 911 emergency system of the 19th century), go through an 1830s log house, and get acquainted with "chores" such as doing Mama's laundry, push plowing, planting seed and shelling corn.

Time and Fees - All school tours must be made by appointment and can be scheduled as early as 9:15 am but no later than 2:00 pm since they take about 2 hours.

Tour Size - We ask that schools bring no more than 50 students per visit. This is because, despite our large complex, the staff, volunteer corps and rooms in the buildings are small. School personnel should be prepared to divide the children into smaller groups of 10-12 each and have enough personnel to accompany each group. Groups are then rotated through the different activities until everyone has participated in all of them.

Other Options - By arrangement, teachers may want to extend the "old-fashioned" experience by having the children dress in old-timey clothing, pack a lunch to be carried in a pail and eaten on the grounds during "recess." Four picnic tables are available. At this time, teachers may opt to have a game session as well. Teachers may also "rent" the schoolhouse to do their own teaching experience if they would like. Corn cob dolls and darts are available as a follow-up classroom activity upon request at an additional fee.

Gift Shop - There is a small gift shop which sells low-cost items that would appeal to school-aged children. Please allow extra time for the gift shop, if desired.
